Hyung Chan was allegedly organizing small, renegade gangs in the area, apparently attempting to extend his New York based empire to Sin City. He was accompanying gang members into downtown establishments, primarily pawn shops, to start a new extortion ring. Why pawnshops? With a pawnshop in your back pocket, you have access to weapons and a "fence" for all your ill gotten gains.
But these business owners are not criminals, and have no desire to associate with them. Even while staring into the eyes of the self proclaimed "most dangerous man in the world," many resisted, which resulted in the vandalism of their stores. It didn't take long for them to realize if they didn't play ball, they wouldn't have a business left to defend. And calling the police was out of the question.
One such victim was Len Ma, a 58 year old Chinese Immigrant and owner of Crazy Pawn, who never thought he would have to face the villains of his homeland here in Las Vegas. His was the last business to be vandalized when I discovered the coincidental police reports. While staking out his shop, I was stunned to see Hyung Chan enter along with two hoodlum-looking bookends.
I took photos of Mr. Ma handing Chan an envelope, then had to hide as they exited the store. But they caught me in an adjacent alley. Chan took my camera, and was about to take my life... when He arrived.
In fact, I wasn't the Man in Black's first rescue of the day. I later learned he had helped a boy being bullied at school, and even rescued a kitten stuck in a tree. But when he stared down Hyung Chan, two armed gang members and Chan's sword wielding body guards, he transformed from good Samaritan into hero.
Chan, his men, and I, were all stunned, not only by his appearance, but by his first words, "You with the chin. Kiss the concrete," referring of course to Hyung Chan's prominent chin, which has won him the popular moniker "Chan the Chin." Although, no one would dare say it to his face. No one, but this brave, strange new superhero.
An incredible battle ensued, with gun fire, hand-to-hand combat, and bolts of brilliant energy. Chan got away, but so did I. The Man in Black had saved my life, and disappeared as mysteriously as he had arrived. The next time I saw him was in Houston, on TV like everyone else.
Then yesterday he appeared again outside the Crazy Pawn pawnshop. He was there, as I was, to try once again to stop Chan from picking up his monthly extortion money. I got there just in time to see Chan and his men explode through the large window and into a parked car. I followed the Man in Black into the alley where we had first met, and he told me his name... Anion. That was all he said to me, and then he was gone.
I don't know who he really is. I don't know where he really came from. But I am absolutely sure, that we will see him again.
